Mobile phones are the success story of bridging the rural digital divide, bringing tangible economic benefits and acting as agents of social mobilization through improved communication. But what are the real challenges that face reaching rural areas, and what are some of today’s most beneficial applications that can help these rural communities, specifically regarding agriculture development?
This Forum will examine the challenges that rural communities face in enhancing the benefits of mobile telephony, and look at some examples of interesting initiatives and good outcomes from around the globe.

KONFERENSI BIOETIKA ASIA DI UIN

UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta dipercaya menjadi tuan rumah penyelenggaraan Konferensi Bioetika Asia ke-9 (The Ninth Asian Bioethics Conference/ABC-9). Pembukaan acara tersebut dilaksanakan Senin (3/11) di Gedung Multipurpose Kompleks UIN. Ketua panitia penyelenggara, Munawar Ahmad menjelaskan, penunjukan UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta sebagai tuan rumah penyelenggaraan ABC ke-9 tersebut merupakan bentuk kepercayaan dunia international. Konferensi yang berlangsung selama lima hari (3-7 November) tersebut dihadiri 230 peserta dari 36 negara dan sekitar 50 observer dari dalam negeri. Ketua Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) yang juga Ketua Komisi Bioetika Nasional, Umar A Jenie sebagai pihak yang menjadi sponsor bersama UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) penyelenggaraan ABC-9 dalam keterangannya seperti disampaikan pihak panitia mengatakan, konferensi tingkat Asia ini merupakan pertemuan rutin yang dihadiri sejumlah ilmuwan dari negara anggota, bertujuan menemukan solusi dari berbagai masalah yang ditimbulkan akibat kemajuan pesat ilmu hayati di tengah masyarakat. “Yogyakarta dipilih sebagai tempat penyelenggaraan konferensi karena memiliki berbagai nilai historis, sosial dan budaya yang kompleks dan masyarakat yang plural. Yogyakarta merupakan tempat yang baik untuk diskusi tentang bioetik,” kata Umar A Jenie dalam keterangan persnya, Sabtu (1/11). Menurut Munawar Ahmad, konferensi ini bakal menyajikan makalah antara lain Menteri Riset dan Teknologi, Kusmayanto Kadiman, Menteri Kesehatan Siti Fadhilah Supari dan Menteri Pertanian Anton Apriantono.
